2018 Winter Events (Central Ohio)

I use the winter as my time to regroup, plot and plan out my year. I also use this time to catch up on various things; especially around my house. As much as I love to hibernate during the winter months; even I know that I need to face the weather and get out every once in a while. Besides to normal, same ol’ same things people do every week; I want to provide you with some events going on within the city and surrounding areas this winter. I will continue to update the list as new events come up.

  1. Paris is Burning: Screening and Panel Discussion. Date: February 7, 2018. Time: 7:00pm. Location: Wexner Center for the Arts; 1871 N. High St, Columbus OH 43210. Admission: Free One of the greatest documentaries of ALL TIME! The iconic cult documentary Paris Is Burning provides a powerful and stimulating look at the golden age of drag ballroom culture in 1980s Harlem—a crucible of LGBTQ expression and style, as well as a refuge for the scene’s Latino and African-American youth. Teaches you everything from introducing you to the legendary houses, voguing, shade, reading, and so much more. If you can’t make it to the Gateway to see it; Netflix has brought it back after briefly taking it off. They found out very quickly that was a HUGE MISTAKE. The panel topics are: Topics in Black Masculinity: The Fierceness of Black Sexuality, Black Gay Identity, and Black Sexual Freedom.
  2. The Big Bacon Bash at the Hills Market Downtown. Date: January 13. Time: 6:00pm – 8:00pm. Location: 95 North Grant Ave, Columbus, OH 43215. Presented by Columbus Underground and Hills Market Downtown. For all of the bacon lovers out there go town to The Hills Market Downtown to sample 10 different variations of unique BACON!   3. HBCU College Fair presented by Columbus Urban League Young Professionals. Date: January 20, 2018. Time: 12:00pm – 4:00pm. Location: The OSU African-American and African Studies Community Extension Center; 950 Mt. Vernon Ave, Columbus OH 43203. A college fair highlighting Historically Black Colleges and Universities. This event is geared toward High School Students, but is certainly open to students of all ages. The HBCUs represented will set up individual tables full of information and giveaways. Attendees will have the opportunity to make their way around the fair and gain information on as many schools in attendance as they wish. Those students who are high school seniors and wish to apply, will have access to computers to complete applications on the spot. During the event, information will be provided about scholarship opportunities, essay writing tips, and insight on what to do after you have been accepted. The event will be open, meaning students and parents may come and go as they please and do not have to stay for the whole event in its entirety. THIS EVENT IS FREE FOR EVERYONE!   4. House History: Uncovering your home’s history. Date: January 24, 2018 Time: 7:00pm – 8:30pm. Location: Bexley Public Library, 2411 E. Main St., Columbus OH 43201 . Have you ever wondered who owned your house before you or when it was built? Join Cindy Lindsay, Local History Librarian, to learn tips and tricks to find out the history of your house and property.
  5. Tiffany Haddish: #SheReady. Date: Saturday, February 3, 2018. Time: 7:00pm – 10:00pm. Location: Jo Ann Davidson Theatre at the Riffe Center, 77 S. High St, Columbus, OH 43215. Tiffany Haddish is quickly establishing herself as one of the most sought-after comedic talents in television and film. Haddish was most recently seen starring in Universals’ Girls Trip alongside Jada Pinkett Smith, Queen Latifah and Regina Hall. Girls Trip had the highest opening for an R rated comedy in the past two years and Vanity Fair called Haddish “the funniest woman alive.” In August, she debuted her comedy special for Showtime titled Tiffany Haddish: SHE READY! From the Hood to Hollywood and she will next be seen starring alongside Tracy Morgan in the new TBS show, The Last O.G. Additionally, she is currently in production alongside Kevin Hart for Universal’s Night School and will be releasing her first book The Last Black Unicorn in December which will be a collection of autobiographical essays about Haddish’s journey through life, comedy and inspiring others.

  12. Talib Kweli w/special guest Niko IS. Date: Thursday, February 15, 2018. Time: 8:00pm. Location: Ace of Cups; 2619 N. High St, Columbus OH 43202.  Legendary Hip-hop performer, entrepreneur and activist Talib Kweli plays the Ace of Clubs.
