Disconnecting from social media

Disconnecting from social media

I decided around a month ago to start logging off of all social media at 8:00 pm; unless I’m contacted directly. And let me tell you…this has been the best decision that I’ve made in a long time. I use this as a time to pray, read, write, take a walk, workout and just wind down from the day. About 75% of the time I won’t even turn on the television. I PERSONALLY…let me stress again…my PERSONAL opinion is that at a certain age…I felt that it was time to let go of the role that social media played in my life. I started to see a lot of people use social media as a means for attention and trying to impress others. As much as I love socializing, joking around, being shady and petty…or doing just whatever…I felt that I could be doing so many other things that are more valuable with my time. Even during the day; I’m not on as much as I was. I may post something, but I’m not necessarily scrolling through my timeline a majority of the day. Truth be told…I only go through my timeline a couple of times a day. Another truth…that’s usually all I can stomach. Sorry but not sorry…just being honest.

By distancing myself from social media, as something that seems so minor; as in such a minor part of our lives; by removing myself, it has helped clear my mind. I now have time to do things that I have the energy and mental capacity to do. Before when I was sick, I looked toward social media to make others happy by making them laugh. That would make me feel better and almost forget, even if for a few minutes of how much pain I was in. Social media has also brought on some moments that I’m definitely not proud of as well. Some people think that they know you by how you are on social media and that’s where the delusion of what social media has become sets in.

However, I’m not all the way reformed because I still use social media to get a good laugh in at the expense of others. I mean let’s just keep it real. I know that I’m not the only one that does this. Since I have more energy and the desire to do things with my life…I felt that this was a necessary thing to do. I’m obviously still on social media…that’s obvious. However, I’m not going to lie, but I don’t enjoy it as much as I used to. That was another reason why I decided to remove myself at night and do other things. One of the biggest thing that gets on my nerves is seeing people who are always trying to dictate how we use our own social media platform. You know those negative people who always have some BS to say. Especially when everyone else is having fun and SOCIALIZING on SOCIALMEDIA!!! Yes…extremely annoying. But don’t worry…I have a post coming for them. In the meantime… I’ve got a lot of writing done, took some writing workshops, networked, worked on my podcast (coming soon), I’ve been reading 1-2 books a week and I’ve been getting back in shape by walking and riding my bike in the evening.

As I will stress ONE MORE TIME…this is what has worked for ME! I love my social media family, but like any other family…I need a beak from y’all sometimes. As I’m sure you do from me as well. I’m not naive that I can be a bit much. LOL! I’m sure that I’ve been unfollowed and muted from some of y’all at one time or another. At the end of the day…I feel that we need to distance ourselves from unnecessary things that take up time where we could be doing other things to become a better person. That’s what I hope to do.
